The Bangladesh Systems Strengthening for One Health Activity is an initiative to enhance the country's capacity to prevent, detect, and respond to emerging infectious and endemic zoonotic diseases, while also addressing the challenge of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

DAI and its partners are strengthening an integrated One Health approach in Bangladesh, supporting the ministries responsible for health, fisheries and livestock, environment, forests, and agriculture, as well as the One Health Secretariat, private sector entities, academic institutions, and other relevant stakeholders. Strengthened systems will be resilient, equitable, and will optimize the use of financing and non-financing resources.

The Activity builds on 15 years of dedicated efforts to institutionalize One Health practices in Bangladesh. Its integrated systems approach emphasizes long-term sustainability, encompasses empowering local leadership, implements phased systems strengthening, institutionalizes One Health practices, and optimizes resources. The Bangladesh Systems Strengthening for One Health Activity seeks both immediate results and to reinforce a resilient and enduring global health security architecture in Bangladesh.

Sample Activities

• Foster improved governance, systems, protocols, and resourcing of the One Health system through informed advocacy with One Health line ministries.

• Support existing governance structures and multisectoral platforms to address human resources for One Health through network mapping for resource optimization, workforce gap analysis, strategic planning, and career path development.

• Enhance national and local laboratory capacity for pathogen and disease detection across the One Health interfaces.

• Strengthen existing One Health early warning systems to prevent disease outbreaks.

• Strengthen existing AMR surveillance systems in human and animal interfaces and ensure interconnectivity.

• Develop national and subnational outbreak response through the exploration of an incident command system for Bangladesh.
